TO HIS WORSHIP THE MAYOR, THE ALDERMEN AND COUNCILLORS OF THE
METROPOLITAN BOROUGH OF PADDINGTON.
Mr. Mayor, Ladies and Gentlemen,
I have the honour to present to you my Annual Report for the year 1934 as required by the Statutes
and Orders applicable to my office.
During the year the health of the Borough continued to be good, with the exception of the
infant population, among which, judging by the experience in the other London Boroughs, the
mortality was unduly high. So far as the causes of this infantile mortality are within the control
of the Council every effort is being made to combat them.
The year has been one of steady progress in strengthening the various schemes for securing the
health of the community, and particularly of mothers and young children. For instance, the scheme
for immunising children against diphtheria infection has now been extended so as to enable private
doctors to deal with children who would normally be their patients.
During the year a large amount of useful work was performed in dealing with unhealthy areas
and individual unfit premises. Apart from the actual measures recorded in this Report, a number
of surveys were made which will result in further action in the near future.
The re-housing on London County Council estates of families displaced by the clearance or
demolition of houses in the Borough has proceeded smoothly and without any serious hardship to
the families concerned.
I have again to express my appreciation of the loyal help of the staff of the Public Health
Department of the Council and to thank the members of the Public Health, Maternity and Child
Welfare, and Special Housing Committees for the support and kind consideration which they have
extended to me during the past year.
I have the honour to be,
Mr. Mayor, Ladies and Gentlemen,
Your obedient servant,
M.D., M.R.C.P., D.P.H.,
Medical Officer of Health
Town Hall,
Paddington Green, W.2.
30th May, 1935.
