* Registrar-General's estimate of resident population.
POPULATION.
Census Returns.—The population enumerated in the Borough in 1931 consisted of
144,923 persons, 61,503 being males and 83,420 being females. In 1921, 144,261 persons were
enumerated, of whom 60,491 were males and 83,770 females. From these figures it will be
seen that during the intercensal period there was a slight increase in the population, the
number of persons in 1931 being 662 in excess of the total recorded in 1921. A small decline
occurred in the proportion of females, the ratios being 1,000 males to 1,385 females in 1921,
and 1,000 males to 1,356 females in 1931.
Although the population as a whole did not vary much during the ten years, striking
changes occurred in certain of the Wards, Queen's Park Ward, in 1931, showing a reduction
of 2,132 persons, and Harrow Road Ward a reduction of 2,039 persons. The figures for
Town and Church Wards were also lower than those for 1921. On the other hand there were
increases amounting to 1,176 persons in Maida Yale Ward, 1,149 persons in Westbourne
Ward, 364 persons in Lancaster Gate West Ward, 1,761 persons in Lancaster Gate East
Ward, and 800 persons in Hyde Park Ward. These variations are shown in the following
table:—
