Bacteriological Work.—The Council have an arrangement with the Lister Institute of
Preventive Medicine, Chelsea Bridge Road, SAV.l, for the bacteriological examination, at the
expense of the Council, of specimens sent by medical practitioners of Paddington patients
suspected to be suffering from diphtheria or typhoid fever.
All specimens are collected at the Town Hall and transmitted to the Lister Institute by
special messenger the same evening. The results are generally available the next morning,
and are telephoned to the medical practitioner concerned.
Examinations of sputa from patients suspected to be suffering from tuberculosis of the
lungs are undertaken by the Paddington Tuberculosis Dispensary, 20, Talbot Road, under an
arrangement which came into operation in the year 1926.

House Drainage.—During the year 124 existing drains were tested and found water-tight,
100 defective drains were reconstructed and 8 made sound by special process.
Reconstruction Plans.—Two hundred and ninety plans (290) were submitted for drainage
works in existing buildings. In connection therewith 702 letters were despatched.
No summonses were issued for failure to supply plans.
Combined, Drainage.—Orders were made under Section 74 of the Metropolis Management
Act, 1855, with respect to new drainage systems to which the following groups of houses were
to be connected:—
Maida Vale, No. 235 and premises in rear.
Fulton Mews, Nos. 9 and 10.
Ranelagh Road, No. 26 and St. Mary Magdalene's Home.
Elgin Avenue, Garage at rear of No. 81.
Portsea Mews, Nos. 5 and 6.
Porchester Road, Nos. 15 and 17.
Beethoven Street, Staff mess-room at rear of No. 23.
New garage at rear of Nos. 20 to 25 (inclusive), Hermitage Street, and Nos.9 to 14 (inclusive)
Church Place with Nos. 13 and 14, Church Place and No. 20, Hermitage Street
respectively.
Wharves, North Side, New workshops, stables, etc.
Ashworth Road, Nos. 30 and 32, Nos. 34 and 36, and Nos. 38 and 40.
Buildings comprising portion of the premises of Carter Paterson & Co., Ltd., on the
East side of Harrow Road, opposite Bishop's Road Bridge and the adjoining roofs
immediately South of the covered-in yard.
New garages within the curtilage of Moscow and Windsor Courts, connected to the existing
drainage system of the adjacent warehouse building.
No combined systems were reconstructed by the Council during the year.
Sewer Connections.—In 1927, 63 were reconstructed, either partially or wholly, 14 after
Orders under Section 85 of the Metropolis Management Act, 1855, and 49 on the initiative of
the owners of the properties concerned.
Water Supply.—Certificates under section 48 of the Public Health (London) Act were
issued with respect to 11 premises.
The Metropolitan Water Board reported 7 cases of discontinuance of water supply. In
each instance the supply was disconnected in consequence of non-payment of water rate. Two
of the premises were found on inspection to be unoccupied. The water supply was restored
to the remaining premises, in 2 instances after the service of notices. No legal proceedings
were necessary.
