MORTALITY IN CHILDHOOD. 55
Inquests were held last year with reference to 7 of the deaths. The deaths comprised 29
of males and 26 of females, one of each sex being over the age of 5 years. At ages under
1 year there were 48 deaths (27 of males and 21 of females), and at ages 1-5 years 5 (1 of a
male and 4 of females). Two deaths were allocated to Hyde Park Ward, 1 to Lancaster Gate,
West, Ward, and the remainder to the five northern Wards. The maximum number allocated
to any Ward was 19 (Church Ward, 9 of males and 10 of females). The deaths are distributed
according to cause, sex, and age, in the appended statement.

The infantile mortality among these children was at the rate of 304 per 1,000 children (of
both sexes), which rate was 70 per 1,000 above that for 1913 and 29 per 1,000 above the
average.
The rate for legitimate children was 82 per 1,000 last year. (See below.)
