the rate (13.68) for 1913. Last year's rate was slighter higher than the mean rate for the five
years 1909-13, but lower than the mean rates for the periods 1904-08 and 1904-13.
Table 9 gives the mortality rates for each sex in the Borough, and in each of the Wards, and
Table 10 the sex-age-group mortalities for the same areas. The total numbers of deaths (persons)
allocated each year since 1909 to each Ward are shown in Table II. of the Appendix, the sex-age
distribution of deaths of residents of the Borough during 1914 from selected causes in Table III.,
and a distribution by sex and causes of deaths allocated to each Ward in Table IV.
The total death-rates (Table 9) last year were in excess of the averages in Queen's Park,
Maida Vale, Westbourne, Church, and Hyde Park Wards. The mortality among males was
above the average in Queen's Park, Maida Vale, Lancaster Gate (West and East), and Hyde
Park Wards, and that among females in Queen's Park, Maida Vale, Westbourne, Church, and
Hyde Park Wards. With regard to the sex-age-group mortalities (Table 10), the rates
recorded in the whole Borough were above the averages in all groups except those of males and
females 0—5 years and females 5—15 years.
Table 11 has been compiled from data extracted from the Quarterly Reports of the
Registrar-General. The total mortality in the Borough is compared with the like rates for the
Metropolis and the districts circumjacent to the Borough. With the exception of the rate for
the County, the highest rate for 1914 included in the Table is that of St. Marylebone (13 96).
The lowest is that for Willesdan (10.25).
Tables 12 and 13 give the Standardised Mortality Rates for All Causes, Pulmonary Tuberculosis
and Cancer. A description of this method of comparing mortalities will be found in the
Report for 1913.
