HOUSING. 89
Before proceeding to consider that table, it will be useful to give an extract (Table 50, page
96) from a table given in the Report by the Board of Trade already referred to. One-room
tenements were at the time of the Board's inquiry (1905-06) dearer in Paddington than in
Kensington, but cheaper than in Westminster and St. Marylebone. Two-room tenements
were cheapest in Willesden (South), otherwise the same as the one-room tenements. Threeroom
tenements were cheapest in Kensington, Paddington coming next.
Turning to Table 49, it will be found that the average rental of one-room tenements in
1906 works out at 3 60 shillings (say 3/7), which is lower than the middle point (3/9)
between 2/6 and 5/-, the figures given in the Board's Report. Similarly, the average for tworoom
tenements was 6'36 shillings (say 6/4½), as compared with 6/6, the middle point of
5/6 and 7/6. The average for three-room tenements was 8 07 shillings (say 8/-), the Board's
middle point, 7/9, being lower. The average for four-room tenements (10.20 shillings, say
10/2½) was again above the Board's middle point (9/6).

To the foregoing the following information (which cannot be regarded as trustworthy) with
regard to tenements of five rooms and over may be added.

Tenements of Seven Rooms. (6 in 1906 ; 0 in 1912.)
Average rental on 6 tenements in 1906, 18.66.
It is singular that Hethpool Street should appear so frequently with maximal averages.
Minimal averages were recorded three times in Lancefield Street. What is known as the
"Clarendon Street Area" is by no means the part of the Borough where rentals are at their
lowest.
* The averages are given first as decimals of shillings and then to nearest commercial fraction of a penny.
