MEASLES.
The cases of measles coming to the knowledge of the Department during the year
numbered 1,368, according to the weekly tabulation, but after correction at the end of the year
the number was increased to 1,374 (males 656, females 718), that total not including 24 cases of
German measles provisionally included under measles in the weekly returns. The numbers of
cases heard of—the disease is not notified—in each of the six years (1907-12) are set out below.
There can be little doubt that some part of the increase in numbers known during the last three
years has been due to more careful reporting by the staffs of the public elementary schools, the
principal source of information, and to the public applying in increasing numbers for
disinfection after the occurrence of the disease, the existence of which would be unknown to
the Department but for such applications.
