The excessive morbidity and mortality which prevail even now in the "Area" are clearly
shown by the figures in Table 54 (page 100), where the more important rates for 1911 and 1912
recorded in the " Area " are contrasted with the rates obtaining in the " Rest of the Borough."
Last year the morbidity rate from scarlet fever in the " Area " was below that recorded in the
" Rest," and for the last two years no cases of puerperal fever have been recorded in the " Area."
The rate from erysipelas—a disease significant of dirt—in the "Area" was more than double that
in the " Rest " last year.
The total mortality rate in the " Area " (26.52) was nearly 2 per 1,000 higher than the rate
for 1911, and more than double the rate recorded in the "Rest" (ll.80). Although the total
mortality increased, the rate for children aged 0-10 years decreased last year from 3918 to
30-22, such decrease being due to the comparative exemption of the " Area " from diseases such
