Estimated Population.—Although the natural increment of the population during the fifteen
months which elapsed between the census of 1911 and the middle of 1912 amounted to 1,390
persons, the population for last year (middle of) has been based on an assumption of a continued
decrease. A new method of making the estimate has been adopted, that described in the
Annual Report of the Registrar-General for 1910. The method in question was devised by the
late Mr. A. C. Waters, of the General Register Office, and has the advantage of giving results for
the component parts of the country (or sub-divisions of any area), which add up to agree with
totals for the whole country based upon an assumption of a geometrical rate of growth of
population—an assumption which fits most closely with theory and practical results.
At present no estimates have been made of the numbers of each sex or of those at various
ages. The estimated population for the Borough at the middle of the past year was 142,362
persons, the estimates for the individual Wards are given below.
