An enumeration of the occupants of registered tenements was made in connection with
the annual cleansing. The enumeration covered 4,902 tenements, comprising 8,192 rooms,
occupied by 15,168 persons, averaging 3.0 persons to a tenement, and 1.8 to a room.

The distribution of occupants according to tenement was:—

The last enumeration taken previous to 1908 was that of 1906, which dealt with
4,372 tenements and 14,862 inhabitants.

The increase in proportion of smaller tenements enumerated last year is shown by the following figures:—

At the same time, there has been some reduction in the average numbers of occupants per room:—

In 1906 the 14,862 inhabitants included 4,531 children under 10 years, equal to 30.4 per
cent. of the total, as compared with 31.6 per cent. in 1908.
