DEATHS IN INSTITUTIONS.
The deaths in the local public institutions, which numbered 770 in 1907, increased to 815
last year. At all the institutions (Table V., Appendix A) last year's numbers exceeded the
averages, especially that of the deaths in the Workhouse and Infirmary (373, average, 287).
Included in the foregoing numbers are the deaths of 341 non-residents, while 187 deaths of
residents occurred in outlying institutions (see Table VI., Appendix A), so that the nett
number of deaths of residents was 662, equal to 35 per cent. of all deaths, as compared with
32.5 in 1907 and an average of 30.5 for the preceding quinquennium. Below are the
percentages for each Ward, from which it will be seen that the figures for four out of
the eight were below the average, but none of them to any great extent. On the other
hand, the increases noted in Westbourne and Church Wards, especially the latter, were
very great.

The proportion of deaths in lunatic asylums was a little below the average (2.2 per
cent., compared with 2.4), the bulk of the increase last year being in the proportion dying in
Poor Law Institutions, other than lunatic asylums.
