The mortality from the respiratory diseases was a little below the mean (2*11, mean 2T7),
but the rates for Westbourne, Lancaster Gate, West, and Hyde Park Wards were above their
means. In Lancaster Gate, West, Ward the increased rate was doubtless due to epidemic
influenza.
Although no deaths from suicide were registered in Harrow Road and Lancaster Gate
East, Wards, the rate from this cause in the whole Borough was slightly above the mean
The largest increases were recorded in Maida Vale and Westbourne Wards.
Alcoholism.—The mortality from the more severe forms of this habit was half the mean
rate, but was in excess of the mean in Queen's Park and Lancaster Gate, East, Wards. The
mortality from cirrhosis of the liver (taken as an index of the milder, and more insidious,
habit of drinking) showed a decline from a mean rate of 0T6 to 0T0. The rate in Lancaster
Gate, East, Ward was the only one in excess of the mean. The combined rates from
"alcoholism" and "cirrhosis of the liver" are given below. To the general reduction in the
rates of last year, that in Lancaster Gate, East, Ward is the solitary exception, last year's rate
(0*40) comparing very unfavourably with the mean rate (0'27).
