METEOROLOGY.
Meteorologically the year was characterised by a higher mean air temperature (51.1°)
and greater extremes of heat and cold (maximum 94°, minimum 20°). There was much
more bright sunshine recorded, 1,580 hours—as compared with 1,344 in 1905, and the number
of days yielding records (292) was also considerably above the number (270) for the previous
year. In spite of the higher maximum temperature and the increased amount of bright
sunshine, the maximum temperature in the sun (128.0°) was lower. More rain fell
(amounting to 24.42 in.) than in the preceding year, but the number of days on which
measurable quantities fell (145) was fewer.
Taking all the data into consideration, they may be regarded as having been favourable
to a healthy year.

BIRTHS.
The births registered within the Borough during the fifty-two weeks taken as the year
1906 numbered 3,152* (1,633 of boys and 1,519 of girls), equal to a rate of 21.22 per 1,000
persons of all ages, the lowest on record. (See Tables I. and II., Appendix.) The births
included 41 of children of non-resident parents, while 175 children were born outside
the Borough, the parents of whom were residents. The nett total of births was,
therefore, 3,286, equal to a rate of 22.10 per 1,000 persons. In Table 2 these births have
been distributed according to the Wards in which the parents resided. The rates for last
year were lower in the Borough as a whole and in Westbourne, Lancaster Gate (East and
West) Wards, but higher in the remaining five.
* Including 34 twin births, viz., 15 of mixed sexes and 19 of same sex (11 of girls and 8 of boys). At least
89 of the children were dead when their births were registered. See Infantile Mortality.
