Institutions.—Of the 2,210 deaths, 806 (780)—equivalent to 36.4 (35.0) per cent.—
occurred in the local Public Institutions, viz.:—Workhouse 91 (66), Infirmary 233 (261),
Lock Hospital 4 (1), Children's Hospital 91 (92), and St. Mary's Hospital 387 (360). The
causes of death and other particulars are given in Tables III. and IIIa., Appendix.
The deaths registered within the Borough included 410 (387) of non-residents, and
161 (173) deaths of residents were reported from other parts of the Metropolis and the
provinces. By excluding the former deaths and including the latter, a nett total of 1,961 is
obtained, being 53 fewer than the total for 1904 and 43 more than that for 1903. The
annual average for 1895-04 is 2,192, 231 in excess of last year's total. If the average be
corrected for increase in the population, it becomes 2,262—301 in excess. The nett totals
for each of the past ten years for the Borough and the three Registration Sub-Districts will
be found in Table II., Appendix.
The corrected numbers of the deaths recorded in each quarter of the last five years, with
the corresponding mortality rates, are given below. The rate for the second quarter of last
year is the highest of the series for the quarter, due to the prevalence of measles and
whooping-cough, and that for the third quarter the lowest. The rates for the first and fourth
quarters of the year compare favourably with the others:—
