The only causes showing increases were—
Measles, scarlet and enteric fevers, and congenital
malformations
Diarrhœal diseases
Increase, 1 death each, and
„ 20 deaths.
Of the deaths from "diarrhœal diseases" (132), 47 were returned as due to "diarrhœa,"
77 to "zymotic enteritis" or one of the synonyms thereof, or 18 to "enteritis." Of male
infants 78 died from these causes (decennial average 02) of female 64 (average, 50). The
increase was slightly larger in the case of females than of males (28 per cent. as compared
with 25 per cent.). Last year's returns were considerably higher than those of 1903, when
87 deaths were recorded, viz., "diarrhœa" 41 deaths, "zymotic enteritis" 33, and
"enteritis 13. It will be noted that the bulk of the increase was in the deaths from
"zymotic enteritis."
