DENTAL SERVICES
Dr. E. Mahler, who held the joint appointment of Chief Dental Officer/Principal
School Dental Officer with the London Borough of Lewisham and the Inner London.
Education Authority, retired during the year, her last day of service being
30th November, 1969.
Dr. Mahler commenced duty on 5th July, 1965, and through her energy and drive
raised the standard of the dental service most noticeably. Improvements were
effected in the dental surgeries and particular attention was paid to the renewal
of equipment with the most modern types available. She had a special interest in
dental health education both in the schools and by counselling mothers of preschool
children attending the Council's health centres. In this respect the puppet
show featuring Peter and Paul Molar, Mr. Giant Toothbrush, Jimmy Germ and
other characters was extremely popular with school children and created considerable
interest in other boroughs.
Despite her complete dedication and involvement in the work of her section,
Dr. Mahler was always willing to discuss personal problems with her staff and
colleagues and to take an interest in their problems. Her colleagues were always
sure of her support and she was well liked by them all.
Dr. Mahler can truly be said to have laid the foundations of a modern dental
service in the Borough.
