Housing Acts, 1957—1964
(a) Improvement of Houses
Grants are available to improve existing houses by providing running hot water,
bathroom, internal water closets, etc. Under the Housing Act 1964, it is possible for
tenants to ask the local authority to require the owner to provide these facilities.
Under the same Act it is also possible to declare Improvement Areas. In these areas,
owners are required to bring their properties up to a reasonable standard. Considerable
publicity has been given during the year to these grants and it is hoped to
extend this type of work during the coming years.
Details of work carried out under this heading are as follows:—
Dwellings where discretionary grants were made 38
Dwellings where standard grants were made 185
