TETANUS
A resident of the Borough, a cook in a hospital kitchen in a neighbouring area, died
of tetanus. It was thought that the patient who had suffered a cut on the hand some
two weeks before became infected through his injury. The instrument and possible
source of the infection could not be identified with certainty.
Following this incident the precautions available for the protection of Council's
staff engaged in duties that could bring them into contact with possibly infected soil
or other material were overhauled by a senior medical officer of the department.
ANTHRAX
A patient was notified as a clinical case of anthrax though direct bacteriological tests
proved negative. Later a serological test proved positive.
She was employed as a packer at a bone-meal factory in another part of London. It
was considered that infected bone-meal, which was delivered to the factory from
elsewhere, was the source of this patient's infection.
All necessary action to prevent further cases of the disease were taken by the
Authorities concerned.
