School for Dental Auxiliaries
This establishment, sponsored by the General Dental Council, is directed by Mr. J. V.
Bingay, O.B.E., and close co-operation is maintained with the Borough Service. It
contains a clinic (4 surgeries), conducted by two dental officers and two dental auxiliaries
on the staff of the Borough Health Department. By joint agreement, the School
is responsible for the routine inspection and treatment of groups of schoolchildren in
Lewisham, in addition to those of a neighbouring Authority. During the year approximately
18,557 attendances were made by Lewisham children and 9,089 teeth were
conserved. In addition to receiving oral hygiene instructions each child is taught the
proper use of the toothbrush. This is of course, general practice in every clinic in
the Borough.
Orthodontics
This is a small but increasing specialty. Mrs. Ward, an orthodontic specialist, joined
the staff in October, and conducts one session a week with dental officers and five
sessions a week on her own.

The Central Dental Laboratory
Provides all orthondontic appliances, dentures, crowns and inlays. Orders are completed
within approximately two weeks and this service is satisfactory.
Anaesthesia
General anaesthetic sessions average one per week. Fifteen to eighteen children per
session are treated, about twenty by given appointments. Emergency cases are always
fitted in at short notice as necessary. Dr. A. Whitfield attends Deptford and Lewisham
Treatment Centres. Dr. E. C. Dawson attends Downham Treatment Centre. Local
anaesthesia is used extensively for routine dental treatment as the dental officer finds
necessary.
