HEALTH VISITING
Dorothy At. Coe, S.R.N., R.F.N., S.C.M., H.V.. C. & G.,
Technical Teachers' Certificate, Diploma in Social Studies,
Borough (Maternal and Child Health and School Health) Nursing Officer
During the year six student health visitors completed the in-training courses and
were appointed to the staff as health visitors.
Parentcraft Classes
These continue to be well attended. Special evening sessions for both parents are held.
Mothers Clubs
These are very popular. A good supply of speakers on a wide range of topics were
invited from various sources. The talks were well received and added much to the
attraction of the Clubs.
School Nursing
Routine visits are paid to all nursery schools and classes. Hygiene examinations, both
routine and special, are organised in all schools. Several cases of scalp ringworm
were successfully investigated, isolated and referred for treatment.
Health Education in Schools
This service has been requested by many Heads of schools, and sessions will be made
available to younger children. This is an expanding need and is met by Health Visitors
and School Nursing Sisters who have taken the Technical Teachers' City and Guilds
Certificate.
Liaison with Hospitals
Health visitors provide an important link with local hospitals by attending outpatients
clinics and undertaking follow-up visiting of diabetic, ante-natal and paediatric
patients.
Surveys
The survey into leukaemia continued, and a survey into spina bifida commenced
during the year.
Visits to Establishments
Many students and others visited the Council's clinics, schools and day nurseries
during the year. Among them were some 330 hospital nurses, 24 social science students,
4 overseas visitors, 3 doctors (for special observation) and 12 schoolgirls.
Lectures and Talks
Have been given by nursing staff to voluntary and statutory associations and to
groups in hospitals and schools.
Health Visitor Students
Six students received practical instruction in the Borough. These were "Integrated
nurse training" students from King's College Hospital.
