NATIONAL SURVEY OF LEUKAEMIA AND MALIGNANT DISEASE
OF CHILDHOOD
During the year the Department has taken part in the national survey of leukaemia
and malignant disease of childhood sponsored by the Department of Social Medicine,
Oxford University, and the Medical Research Council.
The family histories of children registered as having died from leukaemia or other
malignant disease were investigated in co-operation with family doctors. A Medical
Officer visited the parents of those children by special arrangement to enquire into
the history of the child and the family, with special emphasis on x-ray investigation.
A similar complete investigation was carried out in a control series of healthy children
comparable for sex and age.
A total of nine cases and nine "controls" were investigated in this way and complete
records forwarded to Oxford. Because of the countrywide scale of these investigations,
it is hoped that the information obtained will contribute towards elucidating
the aetiology of malignant disease in childhood.
NURSING HOMES
Responsibility for the registration and inspection of nursing homes passed from the
L.C.C. to the London Borough on 1st April 1965 and has since been exercised under
Part VI of the Public Health Act 1936, the Nursing Homes Act, 1963, Part III of the
Mental Health Act 1959 and the appropriate Regulations.
At 1st January 1965 there were four registered nursing homes in the area of the
present London Borough; one of these was registered for the accommodation of
mentally disordered patients; none had been approved for the reception of maternity
patients. Two non-profit making homes (which had been exempt from registration
until the coming into force of the Nursing Homes Act 1963) were in the process of
registration which was completed before 31st March 1965. The numbers of approved
places by various categories were :—
