The Health Committee agreed that it would be useful to carry out an extended
investigation covering all the children at a selection of schools into the incidence of
plantar warts; the correlation, if any, with barefoot physical education or swimming;
methods of early detection and treatment. The Medical Adviser of the Greater
London Council welcomed the investigation and has assisted in the preparations for
it; the statistical section of his department will be collaborating in the analysis of the
results.
With the agreement of the Education Officer of the Inner London Education
Authority the Heads of the selected schools were approached and fifteen agreed to
take part. These schools have a total of 8,239 pupils on their rolls including all age
groups and approximately equal numbers of boys and girls.
Arrangements were made to explain the survey to the parents of the children
involved and to all general practitioners in the Borough inviting their co-operation.
Discussions took place on the treatments used at the various minor ailments clinics.
Preparations were made for teachers of physical education and school nursing sisters
to carry out foot inspections according to a prescribed schedule. The survey will
commence on 1st. February, 1966.
It is hoped to have some useful results in the first year but the whole investigation
will probably extend over several years.
