Looking at it the other way 47,021 of the 72,922 households, or
(.4-5 percent had all four arrangements (piped cold water, piped hot
water, fixed bath, and water-closet). This percentage compares with
45 -2 for the whole of London and in fact Lewisham was only exceeded
in this respect by the City (77-6), Chelsea (66-8), St. Marylebone (65-5)
and Woolwich (70-1)
Population in non-private households
Of the 221,753 total population of Lewisham, 217,625 or 98-14%
were in private households. Of the others 986 were in hotels, boarding
houses etc., 476 were in educational establishments or children's
homes, 1471 were in hospital or nursing homes, 29 were in mental
institutions, 898 were in homes for permanently disabled or aged persons,
209 were in miscellaneous communal establishments, 39 (15) were
in places of detention including Borstals and police stations, and there
were 20 other persons who came under the heading of "campers,
vagrants, etc."
Birthplaces and nationalities of the population
The following are a few interesting figures picked out from some
very detailed statistics. Of the 221,753 population of the borough,
2,584 (2,869) were born in Wales, 2,951 (2,939) in Scotland, 925 (678)
in Northern Ireland, 3,792 (2,370) in the Irish Republic, 194 ( 70) others
in Ireland unspecified, 33 (32) in the Isle of Man and 152 (179) in the
Channel Islands. 2,420 (1,433) of the population were born in Commonwealth
countries, 3,387 (444) in colonies, protectorates, etc. and 3,384
(3,393) in foreign countries.
A further analysis of the birthplaces of persons born outside the
British Isles shows that of the total of 9,603 such persons, 246 (173)
were South Africans, 258 (257) Canadians, 82 (32) from Ceylon, 1,060
(680) from India, 65 (40) from Pakistan, 234 (177) were Australians
and 75 (68) New Zealanders. There were 2,703 (115) from the Caribbean
area. Of those from foreign countries, 2,548 (2,008) were from European
countries, including 129 (103) from Austria, 117 (108) from Belgium,
200 (199) from France, 584 (454) from Germany, 420 (152) from Italy,
84 (84) from the Netherlands, 541 (473) from Poland, 135 (146) from
Russia and 77 (60) from Switzerland. Of the 261 (166) from foreign
countries in Asia, 52 (40) came from China, and 76 from Burma. Of
the 222 (219) from foreign countries in America, 131 (146) came from
the US.
