At the end of the year we still had two vacancies for public health
inspectors and this has a braking effect on the amount of work which
can be done. The pupil public health inspectors' scheme continues
and this, together with similar schemes elsewhere, is having a very
gradual effect on diminishing the total number of vacancies. Unfortunately,
as far as the London boroughs are concerned, the pupil,
having qualified and naturally seeking for additional experience, tends
to leave the borough for new fields at the end of the two years requisite
service. With the help of the Council's post-entry training scheme
Mr. Lakeland, a public health inspector who had been trained here,
obtained the Meat and Other Foods certificate.
In ending the introduction to this report I wish to express my
thanks to the Public Health Department Staff for their work during
the year, and more particularly for the heavy work they have got through
under the Clean Air programme, and for the difficulties they continue
to surmount in this extremely important subject.
My thanks are also due to the Public Health Committee for their
support and guidance in the work done. The Public Health Committee
during the year was constituted as follows :
Alderman A. A. Hawkins (Chairman)
Councillor E. F. Inch (Vice-Chairman)
Councillor Mrs. D. Hurren, J.P. (The Mayor)
Alderman C. S. E. Fox
Councillors Mrs. H. D. Burch, Mrs. C. M. Costello, Mrs. D. I. Cox,
J. E. Dale, J. Donovan, Mrs. D. E. Eagles, Mrs. D. K. Epps, M.B.E.,
P. E. J. Forward, R. J. Groves, Mrs. G. M. M. Land, Mrs. D. E. New,
Miss B. G. Oldham and A. J. Pinnegar.
