Measurement of atmospheric pollution
Table 21, on pages 28 and 29, gives a record of the principal results
from six stations, and also gives some indication of the sunshine, rainfall
etc. during the year. Some of these latter data are not specific to the
borough, having been obtained from a publication of the Meteorological
Office, and relate to the nearest station which records the particular
item concerned.
During the year, as a result of consideration of a report by the
Department of Scientific and Industrial Research submitted to all
cooperating authorities, the committee decided to review their own
programme of atmospheric pollution measurements. As a result it was
decided to dispense at the end of the year with two deposit gauge
stations (at Forest Hill Cricket club and at Brockman Rise) and with a
smoke station (at Downham Depot), and to add sulphur measurements
to smoke measurements at Valentine Court and Paragon Place. During
the year also, at the specific request of the D.S.I.R.'s atmospheric pollution
division, the committee decided to cooperate in a further national
survey being carried out by that body, and as a result a smoke and
sulphur measuring station was set up in Downham, at Pendragon
school. This commenced operating in September, and the results for
the part year were as follows :
