The figures were also divided amongst the various firms and
groups and in 2 cases amongst the men and in 5 cases amongst the
women there was more than one probably tuberculous person present
in a group. In addition, amongst the private residents there were 13
probable cases of tuberculosis in 1,747 males examined and 24 probable
cases amongst 2,665 females examined. Some further enquiries were
made with regard to the groups with more than one case, but no special
action was thought necessary.
If schools are excluded from the figures, the percentages are
somewhat different as school children of course have a much smaller
rate of disease. Of the private residents, as has been stated, there
were 13 cases of probable tuberculosis amongst 1,747 men, giving a
percentage of 0.7, and 24 cases amongst 2,665 women, giving a percentage
of 0.9, but taking these out and also the school children, the remaining
figures for the borough council or for firms show 12 cases of tuberculosis
amongst 1,876 men, giving an incidence of 0.6 percent, and 19 cases
amongst 2,239 women, giving an incidence of 0.8 percent. It will be
seen, therefore, that the incidence of tuberculosis amongst private
residents is just a little higher than it is in firms and administrative
groups. This can probably be explained in large part, if not completely,
by the fact that amongst the private residents those who have some
symptoms are more attracted to being X-rayed, and therefore they rather
overweight their particular group, whilst among firms and commercial
undertakings the tendency is for all the staff to go for examination, and
therefore there is less weighting from those cases which are more likely
to be tuberculous. The numbers are however not so significant as in
the previous year.
