These three stations are well spaced throughout the borough am
form the angles of a triangle, the sides of which are nearly two miles ii
length. No part of the borough is more than two miles from any o
these stations and no station is less than half a mile from the borougl
boundary. Station (1) particularly picks up the extent of the pollutioi
from an industrial area in the South.East. The station at Wearside Roai
indicates conditions in a rather congested part of the borough. Station (3
shows conditions in a residential area, such as the Downham am
Bellingham estates; in a month when an easterly wind prevails
however, it would register pollution from the shunting yards at Hithe
Green.
The results are analysed once a month and the observations ar
correlated with the wind directions as obtained from central source
and they are also compared, on a national level, with the many othe
stations in London and the provinces which carry out similar analyses
The apparatus for the estimation of sulphur in the area was erectei
in time for observations to be made at two of the three stations fo
the month of December. The results of these observations show tha
at the Wearside Road station the weight of sulphur, reckoned as sulphu
trioxide in milligrams per hundred square centimetres per day, wa
1.94 while that at the Verdant Lane Ration was 1.54.
Meteorology
Table 19 gives some indication of the sunshine, rainfall, etc
during the year, but these data are not specific to the borough, havin
been obtained from the Meteorological Office through periodica
reports from the Registrar.General, and they relate to south.east England
Also included are some figures on temperature which were obtained a
the Town Hall by the Borough Engineer's department in connection wit!
plans for concreting ; the thermometer is in an alleyway 5ft. from th
ground, but the recording conditions are not altogether satisfactory.
