Neo-natal Deaths.
The number of infants who died in the first four weeks of life
was 70, and the causes of death were as follows : —
Prematurity 34
Atelectasis 7
Broncho-pneumonia 4
Inter-cranial Hæmorrhage 4
Breech Delivery 2
Gastro-enteritis 3
Congenital Heart Disease 7
Spina Bifida 2
Marasmus 2
Pyloric Stenosis 3
Imperforate Anus 1
Want of attention at Birth 1
Investigations were made into the circumstances of the 69 stillbirths
and 70 neo-natal deaths, and it was found that 30 mothers
received no ante-natal care whatsoever, 16 paid an occasional visit
to their own doctors, 10 were supervised by a midwife, 60 attended
a Hospital clinic, and 23 had attended one of the Ante-natal clinics
provided by the Borough Council.
