at home. In connection with those cases nursed at home the
medical attendant was advised to submit for bacteriological
examination at least two specimens of excreta before certifying
the patient free from infection.
Instructions were given with regard to the personal hygienic
routine to be observed by all the staff of shop " X," and periodic
visits were made to ensure that this routine was strictly followed.
In conclusion, I would like to record my appreciation of
the valuable help and support which I received from Dr. E. L.
Sturdee, O.B.E., Ministry of Health, and also express my
thanks to the members of the Staff of the Public Health Department
for the willing and zealous manner in which they carried
out the extra duties falling on them in consequence of the
outbreak.
Puerperal Fever and Puerperal Pyrexia.
Twenty-one cases of Puerperal Fever were notified, and 25
cases of Puerperal Pyrexia. Of the former, 9 cases proved fatal.
In notifying these diseases, the medical practitioner is given
the opportunity of applying for :—
(a) a second opinion of the case ;
(b) a bacteriological examination of the lochia or blood ;
(c) the removal of the patient to Hospital ;
(d) the services of a trained nurse.
In order to be in a position to comply with any requests
that may be received under the above headings, the Council
have arranged for the services of a gynaecologist and bacteriologist
to be available when required, and have entered into an
agreement with the Ranyard Nurses, whereby a trained nurse can
be provided for attendance at the patient's home. Institutional
treatment is available at the Hospitals of the Metropolitan
Asylums Board.
Pneumonia.
Acute Primary Pneumonia and Acute Influenzal Pneumonia
are notifiable under the Infectious Diseases (London) Regulations,
1928, and during the year 355 cases were notified.
