Legal Proceedings.
Legal proceedings were instituted against the vendors
of adulterated samples in fourteen cases, but only seven
convictions were obtained. In two cases warranties were
successfully set up as a defence; four summonses were dismissed,
the Magistrate being of opinion that the milk had not been
tampered with, and in one case the summons was withdrawn.
The penalties inflicted amounted to £14 2s. and the costs
to £7 10s. 6d., a total of £21 12s. 6d.
The fines imposed in the cases taken to Court by this
Council were very small, and are hardly likely to serve as a
warning to the unscrupulous trader.
