The notifications were followed by a visit to the home
of the patient, and our enquiries elicited the fact that in
16'2 cases there was previous family history of the disease. In
only 19 cases could the disease be traced to actual contact with
another sufferer in the house.
It was found that many of the patients were sadly
ignorant of the precautions which they should have adopted
for the protection of other occupants of the house, and, in
some cases, subsequent visits were made with a view to affording
assistance in this direction.
In only 202 instances, out of the 344 cases notified,
was it possible for the patient to have a separate room or a
separate bed.
Many of the sufferers could only afford occasional medical
treatment locally, and others were in attendance at one or other
of the London Hospitals as out-patients.
