BIRTHS.
Number of births (corrected) in 1912 3343
Average number in previous 11 years 3512
Birth rate per 1,000 in 1912 20.35
Birth rate, County of London 24.5
„ 95 Great Towns 24.9
„ England and Wales 24.0
The total number of Births registered in the Borough
during the year amounted to 3,323. Seventeen of this number
were born to parents whose usual place of residence was in other
districts, and we were advised by the Registrar-General that 37
children were registered in districts outside, the parents of whom
were residents of the Borough of Lewisham. The corrected
number of births belonging to this Borough is therefore 3,343,
the males numbering 1,698, and the females 1,645. In 1911,
3,421 children were born, which shows in one year a decrease of
78 in the number of births.
It is a remarkable fact that the number of births which
occurred in 1912 is practically the same as in 1901, despite the
fact that during this period of twelve years the population has
increased by nearly forty thousand.
The birth-rate still continues to decline, and during the
year under review amounted to 20.35 per 1,000 compared with
21.22 per 1,000 in the previous year, and 25.9 per 1,000 in
1901.
The birth-rate for the County of London was 24'5 per 1,000,
for the 97 Great Towns, 24'9 per 1,000, and for the whole of
England and Wales, 24'0 per 1,000.
Illegitimacy.—The illegitimate births numbered 77,
compared with 101 in 1911.
