CORONER'S COURT AND MORTUARY.
One hundred and fifty-two bodies were removed to the
public Mortuary, eighteen being from districts outside the
Borough. Inquests were held on 141 cases, and 78 post-mortem
examinations made. The portion of the mortuary specially
allocated for infectious cases was not used.
DISINFECTION.
During the year 2,638 rooms were disinfected by formalin
spray, and textile articles such as bedding, clothing, &c., (in all
31,298 articles), removed from infected homes to the Council's
Disinfecting Station for treatment in the steam disinfector.
UNSOUND FOOD.
The following articles of food were surrendered by the
owners as unfit for human food and subsequently destroyed :—
1½-stones hake; 206 lbs. beef; 1 box kippers; 12 boxes
tomatoes; 2 boxes codfish; 1 sack winkles; 1 sack potatoes;
1 box codlings; ½-stone soles; 1 box haddock; 1 trunk haddock;
1 box mackerel.
THE NOTIFICATION OF BIRTHS ACT, 1907.
During the year 3455 notifications of births were received,
in addition to 97 notifications relating to stillborn children.
In 425 cases the notification was only received after a letter had
been sent to the father from this Department, the Registrar's
returns having revealed the fact that no notification had been
received. In these instances of failure to notify, ignorance of
the Act was pleaded in almost every case.
Certain homes were selected to which it was considered
that a visit from the woman sanitary inspector would be useful,
and during the year 1125 visits were made for this purpose.
