BIRTH RATE.
Number of births 3421
Average number of births in previous 10 years 3521
Birth rate per 1,000 in 1911 21.22
Birth rate, County of London 24.8
„ 77 Great Towns 25-6
„ England and Wales 24.4
The total number of Births registered in the Borough
during the year amounted to 3,397. A number of children are
registered every year in the Borough, whose parents are only
temporarily residing in the district ; on the other hand,
children are born in other boroughs, in various nursing homes
and Lying-in Institutions, whose parents really belong to this
Borough. In previous years no corrections have been made for
these transferable births, but now, by the courtesy of the
Registrar General, we are supplied with the figures necessary to
make these corrections. During 1911 live births registered in
in Lewisham were transferred to other districts, and 29
outside births transferred to this Borough. The corrected
number of births is therefore 3,421, compared with 3,412 in
1910, a very slight increase, or probably no increase at all, if
figures for correction had been available in the previous year.
In 1901, 3,320 births were registered, so that in ten years the
annual number of births has increased by only 101. The
number of females born in 1911 was 1,641, and males 1,780.
The birth rate for the year is 21-22 per 1,000 of the
estimated population. In 1901, the previous Census year, the
birth rate was 25.9 per 1,000, a decrease of 4.7 having taken
place in the ten years.
The birth rate for the County of London was 24.8 per
1,000, and for the 77 Great Towns 25'6 per 1,000.
Illegitimacy.—The illegitimate births numbered 101.
