CONTROL OF VENEREAL DISEASES
In April the Health Education Council's Research project began with the
two aims of increasing the proportion of contacts traced and persuaded to attend
for treatment and to increase the general awareness on the nature of the problem.
The project is being carried out in co-operation with the Boroughs of Lambeth
and Wandsworth and St. Thomas' Hospital. The project is planned for one year
and includes an intensifying of Health Education.
The incidence of sexually transmitted disease has continued to increase. The
three Welfare Officers employed by Lambeth are based in Hospital Clinics and
follow-up patients mainly in Lambeth and Wandsworth, but also in some circumstances
patients living in other areas.
The results of the Health Education Council's Research will make a valuable
contribution to our knowledge of the effectiveness of present methods of encouraging
infected persons to such treatment, and to the most helpful way of using Health
Education resources for prevention.
