We are pleased that even mild hearing defects of various origins are
diagnosed early and referred immediately to Braidwood Audiology Unit for
investigation and treatment. (Table 9).
Handicapped Children in the Special Care Unit:
As in previous years, severely multihandicapped children are placed in the
Special Care Unit attached to Tulse Hill Day Nursery; the number of attendances
there is 11. Transport for these children is provided. Some multihandicapped
children are still on the waiting list, being cared for by their families.
Handicapped Children in Day Nurseries:
Recommendation to the Social Services Department for admission of a
young child to a day nursery from Developmental Assessment Clinics and
Observation/Handicap Register, is carefully weighed and considered with regard
to the benefit the child will derive from spending most of the day away from
his home and among other children. The correct selection, and the right
attitude and enthusiasm of the day nursery staff leads to improvement in a
child's social adjustment, speech development, general progress and emotional
stability in almost 100% of cases. It is regrettable that in 1969 there were 65
handicapped children placed in day nurseries; in 1971 there were only 70, in
spite of the increased number of places available.

The distribution of handicapped children in the day nurseries is as follows

Chestnut Day Nursery6
Coldharbour Day Nursery7
Coral Day Nursery7
Cowley Day Nursery6
Cressett Day Nursery7
Cynthia Moseley Day Nursery8
Groveway bay Nursery3
Lambeth Walk Day Nursery1
