Smoke Control Areas
Three Smoke Control Orders (Nos. 21, 22 and 23) were confirmed by
the Minister of Housing and Local Government covering areas of Streatham,
Clapham and Streatham Vale.
19,665 inspectors and visits were made to premises and 369 observations
(119 timed, 250 untimed) were made on chimneys.
382 smoke nuisances were abated after informal action and no abatement
notices were required to be served.
In spite of difficulties in the disposal of garden refuse few complaints of
smoke from bonfires were received.
Smoke Control Orders in force covered an area of over 2,900 acres
involving 52,513 premises, with a further 847 acres (13,382 premises) covered
by Orders made but not operative.
National Survey
It was possible to maintain only one Volumetric Measurement Station
(for Smoke and Sulphur Dioxide) to assist in the National Survey.
This was due to the co-operation of the Staff and Students of the Norwood
Technical College, Knight's Hill, S.E.27.
ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH - GENERALLY
The diversity of headings in this section gives some indication of the allembracing
nature of "Environmental Health".
Infectious Diseases
319 visits were made by Public Health Inspectors investigating cases of infectious
disease.
Tracing sources of infection and preventing its spread requires a tactful
but persistent approach.
