Despite bad conditions underfoot, rat and insect infestation, and unpleasant
smells, the personnel engaged completed their work and it is a tribute to them that
the premises are now in a reasonable condition, the rodent infestation cleared and
a menace to health removed.
ATMOSPHERIC POLLUTION - CLEAN AIR ACT, 1956
Smoke Control Areas
Areas No. 16, 17 and 18 became operative, whilst Nos. 19 and 20 were
confirmed by the Minister of Housing and Local Government to become operative
in 1968. The impetus given to the Gas Industry by the discovery and exploitation
of North Sea Gas, was reflected by an increased demand for gas heaters to replace
obsolete heating equipment with grant assistance. Conversely, the demand in
Smoke Control Areas for "off-peak" electric storage heaters continued to be
disappointingly small. Demand for solid fuel appliances also slackened.
National Survey
Due to the departmental re-organisation it was not possible to co-operate
with the Ministry of Technology at Stevenage to the same extent as before. One
Volumetric Measurement Station (for Smoke and sulphur dioxide) was maintained
at Norwood Technical College, Knight's Hill, S.E.27.
