The Clapham Adult Training Centre continues to provide industrial work and
social training for mentally subnormal men and boys over 16 years of age from
Lambeth and Wandsworth. A high standard of work is carried out and an incentive
payment scheme is in operation. It has not yet been possible to provide adult
training facilities on a mixed basis and the women and girls continue to attend
centres in Wandsworth and Lewisham. Meetings with the Borough Architect’s
department have commenced in order to plan a 150 place centre in the Loughborough
Park Redevelopment Area which will replace the Clapham Centre in 4 to 5 years
time and cater for mentally subnormal adults of both sexes.
There are no day centres for the mentally ill in the borough but a number of
Lambeth patients are financially sponsored at the Castle Day Rehabilitation Centre
and the Camberwell Day Centre, both in Southwark. Others attend the Crossways
Rehabilitation Centre run by the Institute of Social Psychiatry.
Residential Services
Mentally ill patients needing a period of rehabilitation, or longer term
sheltered accommodation after discharge from hospital, are sponsored by the
borough in homes and hostels administered by other local authorities and by
voluntary organisations. Mentally subnormal children and adults are catered for
similarly and periods of short term care are also arranged to give relief to
families where this is required.
Day Hospitals for Mentally 111 Persons
There is no day hospital within the borough, but a number of Lambeth patients
attend Maudsley, Tooting Bec, West Park and St. George’s Day Hospitals.
Social workers at the day hospitals are supplied by the boroughs in which
they are situated. Home visiting in Lambeth is carried out by the borough’s mental
health social workers. There is close liaison between Lambeth mental health
social workers and hospitals (both day and other) where Lambeth patients are
treated.
ST. THOMAS’S HOSPITAL-COMMUNITY STUDY IN LAMBETH
St. Thomas's Hospital was created a district hospital with special responsibility
for the medical care of the population of Lambeth. This development was
seen by the Hospital authorities as producing both the opportunity and the need
for investigating the demand for hospital care in this area of London. A series of
Studies was projected with the object of providing information about the health
of the population needed for the planning of the hospital services.
