SCHOOL DENTAL SERVICES 1967
REPORT OF THE PRINCIPAL SCHOOL DENTAL OFFICER
In my report last year I said that 1966 had been a year of preparation and
planning for the future. 1967 has seen the implementation of plans made jointly by
the Council and the Inner London Education Authority. Lambeth has taken full share
in giving effect to new schemes to develop a more progressive I.L.E.A. dental
service.
Staff
In implementing the new schemes dental officers and dental surgery assistants
have had to adopt new ideas which they have done willingly with excellent results.
None of the schemes could have been developed successfully without their understanding
and co-operation, to which I am glad to have the opportunity to pay tribute.
Three sessional dental officers and three dental surgery assistants, two of them
with long service, left during the year. Because of difficulty in recruiting dental
officers, only one of those who left was replaced. Staff at 31 December 1967 were
as follows —
Principal school dental officer 1
Full time dental officers 3
Sessional dental officers 4 (1.7 whole time equivalent)
Dental surgery assistants 6
School dental inspections
It had for some time been the practice to limit dental inspections to new school
entrants. In accordance with the I.L.E.A.'s revised policy, a start was made on
dental inspection of all children at infants' and primary schools. While it is understood
that there had been in the past some difficulty in arranging for inspections in
their schools, it was found that with full prior consultation on the arrangements,
willing co-operation of heads was almost invariably forthcoming.
