The position was reviewed in September 1966, and whilst retaining the
Veterinary Officer, Corporation of London, in a consultative capacity, it was
agreed that the inspection of Animal Boarding Establishments should now be
carried out by the Public Health Inspectors.
During the year 3 visits were made to the 2 Animal Boarding Establishments
licensed in the Borough.
DISEASES OF ANIMALS ACT 1950
The administration of the Diseases of Animals Act 1950 was one of the
functions transferred to this Council from the former London County Council.
Arrangements were made for the Corporation of London, who have the essential
veterinary staff to enforce all the necessary provisions of the Act as agents of
the London Borough of Lambeth. No formal action under the Act or orders made
thereunder was necessary during the year, but the Veterinary Officer, Corporation
of London, made 44 visits in Lambeth during the year.
INSPECTION AND SUPERVISION OF FOOD AND FOOD PREMISES
The sampling of imported food at the Nine Elms Cold Store continued
throughout the year with an increase in the number of samples taken.
The products with which the Food Inspectors were concerned were
pasteurised frozen whole egg, shrimps and prawns.
On the whole, the position with regard to pasteurised eggs was most
satisfactory and relatively few failures of the alphaamylase test were recorded.
Arrangements are made in such circumstances for re-pasteurisation to take place.
During the year 7,856 packets of shrimps and prawns were exported with an
undertaking to re-import them because of unsatisfactory bacteriological
results. This was nevertheless a small proportion of the total imports of these
products.
Although not on the same large scale a number of different types of food were
exported from Lambeth, which included:-
Ice cream to Hong Kong
Sweets of various types to Kuwait, Baghdad
Loins and legs of Lamb to Gibraltar and quantities of fish paste,
chicken and other paste to many countries.
Inspections of the three milk bottling depots in the Borough have been carried
out regularly. From these three depots approximately 400 million bottles of milk
are distributed per year.
