VITAI, STATISTICS
POPUT ATION
The Registrar-General's mid-year estimate for the year 1966 is 339,400.
This is a decrease of 160 on the mid-year estimate for 1965.
The number of live births exceeded the deaths giving a natural increase of
3,568.
This would appear to indicate a movement of residents out of the Borough.
BIRTHS
The number of live births decreased by 67, giving a corrected birth rate of
19.35 compared with 19.5 in 1965. The birth rate for the Borough is higher than
that for England and Wales, and for the Greater London Area, which both stand
at 17.7 per 1,000 home population.
There was a reduction in the number of illegitimate births - 1,176 occuring
compared with 1,222 in 1965.
The percentage of illegitimate births, 16 per cent, is still high, in fact more
than twice the National average.
STILL BIRTHS
Fewer still births occurred during the year, giving a still birth rate of 15.2
per 1,000 total births. This rate approximates to that for England and Wales,
which is 15.3, but is slightly higher than that for the Greater London Area which
is 14.2.
DEATHS
There were 95 more deaths in 1966 than in 1965, 3,804 deaths occurring
compared with 3,709 last year. This, combined with the decrease in population,
gives an increased death rate of 11.87.
This rate is higher than that for England and Wales which is 11.7 and the
Greater London Area which is 11.1.
Heart and associated diseases accounted for the largest number of deaths.
Malignant neoplasms of all forms ranked second in the causes of death.
Fewer people died from Respiratory Tuberculosis. Deaths from Influenza,
Pneumonia and Bronchitis increased 593 people dying from these causes compared
with 479 in 1965.
