Regrettably the department cannot yet function as one unit and has to continue,
geographically in two parts, the personal health services at Blue Star House and
the environmental health services at Offley Road. The difficulties incurred are
offset to some extent by frequent meetings of senior staff from the two addresses.
Two senior members of the staff of the department left during the year, Miss
S.G. Earl, deputy principal nursing officer, to take up an appointment with the
Ministry of Health, and Mr. A.C. Puttock, deputy principal administrative officer,
who unfortunately had to retire for reasons of ill-health after 46 years' service,
most of it in the Lambeth area.
I am most fateful to the Chairman and members of the Health Committee for
their help and assistance and to all members of the Council who have given me so
much encouragement and support.
I am most appreciative of the help and co-operation of the family doctors and
hospital staffs with whom the department is in almost daily contact throughout
the year.
The smooth working of the department, in face of the difficulties which
inevitably occur in a department of this size, geographically divided, is in large
measure due to the willing service, loyalty and co-operation of the staff to whom
I pay special tribute and thanks. I am indebted to the Chief Officers of other
departments for the help they have given me.
I am,
Mr. Mayor, Ladies and Gentlemen,
Your obedient servant
A.I,. THROWER
Medical officer of Health
