HAIRDRESSERS AND BARBERS
During the year the Minister of Housing and Local Government agreed to
make an order revoking the existing bye-law made by the Lambeth Metropolitan
Borough Council and to a new bye-law being made under Section 77 of the Public
Health Act, 1961 on the lines of the new model bye-laws.
These bye-laws are now inforce, and during the year 52 visits were made to
hairdressers and barbers.
GENERAL
HEALTH EDUCATION
Health Education continued throughout the year. Publicity was maintained
on all topics in Welfare Centres and other Council Establishments. Special
emphasis was placed on smoking, mental health, venereal disease, family planning
and the prevention of home accidents.
Support was given to campaigns held on a National level, including a Mental
Health Campaign held in June sponsored by the National Association of Mental
Health, and immunisation and anti-smoking campaigns sponsored by the Ministry of
Health.
In connection with the Mental Health Campaign an open day was held at the
Clapham Adult Training Centre for sub-normal men.
A public safety exhibition covering all aspects of safety was staged in
November at the Tulse Hill Drill Hall by the department of the Borough Engineer
and Surveyor. The Health Department presented a stand dealing with all types of
accidents which can occur to under five year olds. The attendance was approximately
5,000.
Other health education activities included talks to schools and colleges,
mothers in Welfare Centres, relaxation classes and special oourses of in-service
training for home helps.
Group discussion on the social aspect of common cases took place between
medical students from St. Thomas' Hospital and Health Visitors.
The Health Education Sub-Committee met at monthly intervals to discuss and
chose display materials and to appraise any new health education media which
became available.
