INSPECTION AND SUPERVISION OF FOOD
AND FOOD PREMISES
Upon the formation of the London Borough of Lambeth it was considered
that there should be three inspectors to carry out the Council's functions under
the various enactments concerned with food, each being responsible for one
third of the Borough.
There are four large dairies in the Borough which pasteurise and bottle seven
million bottles of milk per week and these are supervised for all purposes by the
food inspectors.
The large dairy companies have for some time been trying to perfect or
purchase an efficient scanning device which will reject bottles in which extraneou
matter has remained even after treatment in the bottle washing machines. Over
a period of years little real success has been achieved for one reason or another
but it appears that at the moment the milk trade is optimistic that such a device
will be perfected and put into production in the near future. If successful this
should reduce the number of milk bottle complaints.
The cold store at Nine Elms continues to require visits by the food
inspectors and sampling, especially of imported shrimps and pasteurised whole
and egg white, is regularly carried out.
