HOME HELP SERVICE
Prior to 1st April, 1965 the home help service in the Metropolitan Borough
of Lambeth was based on two areas. The addition of that part of the Metropolitan
Borough of Wandsworth which was included in the London Borough of Lambeth
necessitated a re-organisation of the home help service. The service is at present
organised in three areas, each staffed by a home help organiser, assistant home
help organisers and clerical staff based on offices in Offley Road (Lambeth North),
Loughborough Welfare Centre (Lambeth Central) and Riggindale Welfare Centre
(Lambeth South).
Demands tor the service continue to grow and may be expected to do so, due
largely to the increasing number of old people in the community who represent over
80% of those receiving help. Home help is provided without charge for families
where the mother is suffering from toxaemia of pregnancy. (See page 43).
CO-OPERATION WITH GENERAL PRACTITIONERS
Every effort is made to maintain and develop the good relationship which
exists between the personal health services and general practitioners. General
practitioners are employed for sessional work in Welfare Centres and free use of
ante-natal clinics is granted to general practitioner obstetricians who wish to see
their own booked patients.
One general practitioner who provides a child welfare clinic in his own surgery
has requested and been given the services of a health visitor for the session. Any
further similar requests would be considered sympathetically within the limits of
the available staff.
CO-OPERATION WITH HOSPITALS - MATERNITY BEDS
The Medical Officer of Health, Principal Nursing Officer and Non-medical
Supervisor of Midwives are all members of the two Maternity Liaison Committees
which cover the area.
