During the year the caseworkers have worked with 33 families with a total
of 154 children. Work with 9 of these families was undertaken at the request of
the Children's Department.
VACCINATION AND IMMUNISATION
Parents are encouraged to have their babies vaccinated against diphtheria,
whooping cough, tetanus, poliomyelitis and smallpox. This may be done either at
one of the Council's Welfare Centres or by the child's family doctor. Arrangements
originated under the London County Council for the systematic following-up of
each child in the Borough with the object of securing that all are fully protected
against these diseases have been continued. Re-inforcing doses are given to
older children under similar arrangements.
Vaccination against poliomyelitis for all persons under 40 years of age is
also available at the Council's clinics.
The Council pays fees to family doctors for records of vaccination of their
own patients. Doctors may obtain free of charge from the Council supplies of the
antigens used in Welfare Centres, for such of their patients who would be entitled
to vaccination by the Council. (See page 45).
INTERNATIONAL CERTIFICATES OF VACCINATION
Certificates of recent successful vaccination/inoculation are required by
persons travelling to certain countries abroad. After completion by the vaccinating
doctor (normally the person's own doctor) the certificate must be taken or sent
for authentication of the doctor's signature by the medical officer of health for the
area in which the doctor practises.
In Lambeth signatures on certificates are authenticated in the Health
Department, Blue Star House, 234/244, Stockwell Road, S.W.9.
TUBERCULOSIS
Extra Nourishment
At the end of the year extra nourishment (milk, butter and eggs) had been
supplied on the recommendation of the Chest Physicians to 78 tuberculous persons
at home. Clothing was also provided to a small number of such patients.
Knight's Hill Hostel
Residential accommodation is provided at Knight's Hill Hostel for 32 homeless
men who are infective but not confined to bed. This hostel is one of three serving
the Inner London Boroughs. Most of the residents at Knight's Hill Hostel are
chargeable to other boroughs.
