yearly averages of 2070.2, 1503 5 and 958.6 for the decennia
1891-1900 (Parish), 1901-1910 (Borough), and 1911.20 (Borough)
respectively and totals of 693, 859 and 535 for the years 1921, 1922 and
1923. These figures, like the figures for the deaths of infants under 1 year
of age, also represent an enormous saving in young life (under 5 years
of age).
4.—Mortality (all ages).
The different rates of mortality from different diseases and groups
of diseases during 1923 and 1924 are given in terms of the total deaths
(corrected) in Table E, which gives also the corrected deaths from the
chief infantile diseases, expressed in terms of the corrected infantile
population (i.e, the number of births registered as corrected by the
Registrar-General).
5.—Zymotic Death-Rates.
The zymotic death rate is made up of the total deaths from the
seven principal zymotic diseases, viz.: small-pox, measles, scarlet
fever, diphtheria (including membranous croup), whooping cough,
" fever" (including typhus, typhoid or paratyphoid or enteric and
simple continued or ill-defined) and diarrhoea.
The total number of deaths registered within the Borough from
these diseases is 205—81 strangers belonging to other districts and 124
parishioners who died within the Borough; whilst, in addition, 73
parishioners died from these diseases outside the Borough. Subtracting
the strangers and adding the parishioners who died outside the Borough,
there is a corrected total of 197, giving a zymotic death-rate (corrected)
of 0.6 per 1,000 inhabitants. As in the case of general death-rates,
the zymotic death-rates vary in the inner and outer districts, viz., 1-06
as compared with 0.3 per 1,000 population (vide Table 1)).
Taking the seven principle zymotic diseases separately, the
corrected death-rates are:—Small-pox 000, measles, 0-28, whooping
cough 0.07, scarlet fever 0.03, diphtheria 016, "fever" 000, and
diarrhoea 0.09, per 1,000 of the population.
Tuberculosis Death Rates.
The tuberculosis corrected death-rate for 1924 is 11 i.e, 358
deaths from all forms of tuberculosis per 1,000 population, and the
consumption (phthisisy death-rate, 0.9, i.e., 279 deaths from pulmonary
tuberculosis or consumption (phthisis) per 1,000 population.
