HEALTH EDUCATION SERVICE
Plato once said that education is a life-long business. The business of Health education
is education for long life.
Health Education has a two-fold aim. Firstly to inform and secondly to persuade to
action.
The main object of any form of education is to communicate and it is only by making this
communication work that education can find its true target. We must know that the individual
with whom we are communicating understands what we mean. It is not good enough for the educator
to know what he is saying - he must know that what he is saying has been understood. In
addition we also have the problems of the foreigner or immigrant who either cannot speak
Qiglish or has communication problems and he should be approached within the framework of
his own customs and social structure.
To-day the public is more informed than it has ever been before, due to the sophisticated
methods of communication which are available, and it is pleasing to note that members of the
public are fast becoming aware of the fact that information and advice on many health topics
is available at so many points in the Borough.
The health education service continued to carry out its many varied functions during the
past year and a number of new experiments were undertaken.
DENTAL HEALTH
It will be remembered that in 1966 many of the Borough's primary schools were visited by
the famous circus personality Pierre the Clown who gave his talks on dental health education.
These proved to be so popular that he was asked once again to tour the Borough and visited a
further 41 primary and infant schools giving talks to another 10,000 children.
HEALTH EDUCATION CONFERENCE
In an endeavour to make members of teaching staff of schools situated in the Borough more
aware of health education, the Inner London Education Authority, in conjunction with the
Public Health Department, held a very informative Health Education Study Day at the I.L.E.A.
Teachers Conference Centre. This was attended by representatives of every school in the Borough
and a number of interesting papers dealing with some of the current problems in the health
education field were presented by distinguished speakers. These were as follows:-
