IMPROVEMENT AREAS
Three additional areas were proposed as Improvement Areas pursuant to the provisions of
the Housing Act 1964. These were (1) Theberton Street Area 97 houses, 136 lettings, (2)
Remington Street Area 82 houses, 136 lettings, (3) Kingsdown Road Area 168 houses, 313
lettings.
Tibberton Square, Corbyn Street and Mitchison Road Areas were proposed as pilot scheme
General Improvement Areas as envisaged in the White Paper "Old Houses into New Homes".
Proposals have been prepared in respect of Tibberton Square and improvements discussed with
the owners, resulting in a large measure of agreement. The Public Health Inspectors have
conpleted their survey work on the Corbyn Street and Mitchison Road Areas and various
suggestions for improvements have been made. The reports of other Departments are awaited
in respect of the Corbyn Street Area and the views of the Greater London Council, who are
the owiers, in respect of the Mitchinson Road Area.
The following areas are also receiving attention as areas of improvement, where
concentrated use is being made of powers (repair, provision of amenities, means of escape
in case of fire, etc.) available under the 1957 and 1961 Housing Acts, there being
insufficient seperate dwellings to justify action under the Housing Act 1964.
